Designing for Compliance

How to Avoid Costly Rework

Great design and compliance shouldn’t be at odds but too often, they’re treated that way.

One of the most common challenges we see is projects progressing deep into design before certification input is sought. By that stage, even small compliance issues can lead to significant redesign, delays, and added costs.

At Ventura Building Surveyors, we work alongside architects and designers early in the process to help identify potential risks and streamline the pathway to approval without compromising the integrity of the design.

Here are some of the most common issues we see:

1. Egress and access oversights

Seemingly minor layout decisions can have major implications for exit travel distances and accessibility compliance.

2. Fire separation and materials

Material selections and wall configurations can trigger compliance issues if not considered early.

3. Performance solutions introduced too late

While performance pathways can unlock great design outcomes, leaving them too late often leads to unnecessary complexity.

4. Misalignment with approval pathways

Understanding whether a project is best suited to a CDC or DA pathway early can save weeks in approval time.

A better approach

Engaging your certifier early allows for:

  • Smarter, more efficient design decisions

  • Fewer redesigns and RFIs

  • Greater confidence heading into approval
